If fashion can have its cruise collection and now even a pre-collection aka the ‘transitional collection’ as well as its two regular seasonal collections, then interior designers aren’t far behind. The interiors fashion calendar might not change quite as quickly as the catwalk collections but it’s catching up, currently boasting two seasonal collections a year so the savvy home consumer – who averages a home decor overhaul every three years – can stay streets ahead.

For those who want to keep on top of the latest trends without blowing the budget and causing complete upheaval, we asked New Notting Hill-based design duo Georgina Bulmer (pictured left) and Louisa Keating (pictured right), the ladies behind Atlantic Interior Design – who have a combined 20 years’ experience working with the likes of Kelly Hoppen, Helen Green and Taylor Howes Designs (all award winners) – how to incorporate the best of today’s looks into home design;

1 This year’s colour is charcoal grey. Try painting your hall in Ocean Grey Light – 4420p by Sanderson (www.sanderson-uk.com) but be careful not to choose a dull shade. You can then lead off into other rooms with aqua blue shades such as Light Blue by Farrow & Ball (www.farrow-ball.com).

2 Bold wallpapers aren’t for the fainthearted but they work really well in small areas such as in a cloakroom or dressing room. For larger rooms use a wallpaper that creates an elegant backdrop and allows the furniture to be the real feature.

3 Sliding panels are a simple way of dividing two spaces very effectively. In a living room-come-study this is a great way to give some privacy without totally blocking off the room. Sometimes there is just not enough space for a wall to divide two areas.

4 Buttoned upholstered headboards are the latest look – a throw-back to the buttoned sofas – yet this look is very contemporary. Use chrome studding to add detail.

5 Plasmas have been around for a while now but the arms for them are getting better, allowing more flexibility in their positioning. Consider positioning the sofa facing towards the fireplace and then place the plasma on the side wall in a concealed joinery unit so it can be swivelled on an arm to face the sofa.
